• What is an Initial Certificate of Compliance (COC)

An Electrical Certificate of Compliance (CoC) is a legal document in South Africa that certifies an electrical installation in a property is safe and meets national safety standards (SANS 10142-1, the wiring code) at the time of inspection.

  • What is a Supplemental Certificate of Compliance (COC)

A Certificate of Compliance is a legal document that verifies electrical installations meet safety standards. A supplemental COC is issued when:

    • New electrical work (e.g., installing a generator, solar system, or changeover switch) is added to a property.
    • The property already has an initial COC from a previous inspection or sale.
    • The new work needs to be documented and certified seperately without replacing the original COC.

Why do you need an Initial COC?

Safety Assurance

It confirms that the electrical installation is safe for use and poses no risk of fire, shock, or other hazards.

Insurance Validity

Many insurers require a valid COC to process claims related to electrical faults or damage.

Property Transfer

It protects both buyer and seller during property transactions by documenting the condition of the electrical system.

Baseline for Future Work

It serves as a reference point for any future upgrades or supplemental COCs.

Why do you need a Supplemental COC?

New Electrical Installations

If you add a generator, solar panels, changeover switch, or any other electrical upgrade, a supplemental COC certifies that this new work meets safety standards.

Legal Compliance

South African law requires all electrical work to be certified. A supplemental COC keeps your property compliant without needing a full reinspection.

Insurance Protection

Insurers may reject claims if new electrical work isn't properly certified.

Property Value and Resale

Buyers and agents often request proof that all electrical work – not just the original – is certified.

Safety Assurance

It confirms that the new additions won't compromise the safety of the existing system.
